A sailing ship of war in the 1790s is not a comfortable place to be. You sleep below decks, where it is hot, airless, and smelly. The ceilings are so low that you can't even stand up straight. You eat salt meat and hard bread. You can drown if your ship sinks, you can be taken prisoner, you can be killed in battle ... It is a hard, tough life, and you are lucky if you survive.
Horatio Hornblower wants to do more than just survive. He is only seventeen, the youngest midshipman on the ship, and he has a lot to learn. At first he is so miserable that he wants to die, but he learns how to survive, and he learns fast. He learns to be brave, and also generous; he learns when to take a chance, when to fight, and when not to fight.
And he has plenty of chances for learning - sailing through storms and through fog, fighting battles with the French, and then the Spanish, surviving as a prisoner of war...
